A Study of Morphometric Measurement of Antero-posterior Diameters of Medial and Lateral Condyle of Femur in Bangladeshi People.

Morphometric measurement of femoral distal end has important implications in total knee replacement surgery, which aims to restore the morphology of the distal femur to as near normal as possible, as the condyles of femur articulates with the upper end of tibia and patella forming complex variety of synovial joint. This descriptive cross-sectional purposive study was done on 150 (64 right and 86 left) fully ossified dry human femur of Bangladeshi people to find out the variation of morphometric measurement of antero-posterior diameters of medial and lateral condyle of femur. Samples were collected in the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh from January 2019 to December 2019. All samples were assessed to eliminate fractured, pathologically damaged and remodeled bones. The diameters were measured with the help of digital Vernier slide calipers. The mean ±SD antero-posterior diameter of medial condyle of right and left femur were 53.26±4.91 mm and 51.70±4.12 mm and antero-posterior diameter of lateral condyle of right and left femur were 55.77±4.32 mm and55.65±3.94 mm respectively. An accurate morphometric measurement of condyles of femur plays an important role in designing prosthesis material for knee joint which would assist orthopedicians to ensure early mobility with fewer complications after arthroplasty. These data also provide information about condylar diameters of femur of Bangladeshi people and to compare these data to those from other countries. Thus it could contribute for the design of well-fitting prosthesis which suits the Bangladeshi population. This value may be considered while making a best-fit femoral prosthesis.
