A Triazolium based Dicationic Salt as a Dual-function agent for Carbon Activation and Electrolyte in Supercapacitor
• Triazolium based dicationic salt have been employed as activator and electrolyte. • Activated carbon–dicationic salt system showed a wider 2 V possible working. • The device exhibited a notable specific capacitance of 186 F/g at 2 mV/s for 2 V. • The specific energy, and power were 6.11 Wh/kg, and 815.16 W/kg, respectively. • The real time application was demonstrated by lighting red LED for 5 minutes. This paper describes a sustainable method for producing activated carbon for supercapacitor electrodes utilising a triazolium-based dicationic salt that serves as both an activating agent and an electrolyte, providing an effective alternative to traditional corrosive activating agents. The dicationic salt-assisted activation procedure yielded porous carbon with a higher surface area of 865 m 2 /g, greater graphitisation, and reduced structural disorder, exhibiting outstanding electrochemical characteristics as an electrode material, as determined by material characterisations. Interestingly, the electrolyte was the same dicationic salt that was used for activation, resulting in a synergistic dicationic–AC system with a 2 V working voltage. Additionally, electrochemical tests of the developed device showed significant specific power and energy of 815.16 W/kg and 6.11 Wh/kg at 0.79 A/g, respectively, as well as a substantial specific capacitance of 186 F/g for 2 V (2 mV/s). By illuminating a red LED to indicate the dual functioning of dicationic salts in synthesis and application, the system displayed real-time application while maintaining 87% of its initial capacitance following 3000 cycles. This integrated strategy offers a sustainable and efficient path for cutting-edge energy storage systems using dicationic salts, while also streamlining processing and improving performance.
