Block‐Structured Meshing in Coupled Problems With Moving Domains

ABSTRACT Structured mesh generation is a delicate task in (multi‐physics) simulations on moving domains. For a given geometry, such meshes may be generated based on a block‐structure: This is a coarse‐scale representation of the geometry using blocks with the exact geometry and desired grading information assigned to the block edges. Based on the block‐structure, high‐quality meshes with any number of elements and orders may be generated. For large movements such as in rotations or substantial translations, the connectivity of the block‐structure has to be updated at selected time steps in order to maintain optimal mesh quality of the resulting meshes. We propose block‐structures providing a fixed connectivity within certain time intervals, however, following the motion of the immersed objects. Meshes are easily generated within these blocks. At a few instances in time, the connectivity of the (spatial) block‐structure has to change, and data projection between the resulting meshes is required. Numerical results confirm the success of the proposed approach.
