Feasibility study on microwave ablation of liver tumor via the inferior vena cava approach

Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of microwave ablation (MWA) for liver tumors using the inferior vena cava (IVC) approach and to provide a new strategy for the treatment of liver tumors located adjacent to the IVC. Methods: In our large cohort of liver tumor ablation surgeries, 2 patients presented with tumors in challenging locations. The lesions were small and situated in the caudate lobe of the liver adjacent to the IVC. Conventional ablation approaches were therefore not feasible. After detailed preoperative planning, MWA via the IVC approach was performed. Pre- and postoperative patient data were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The tumor was completely ablated without major complications, including thrombosis in the IVC. Conclusions: MWA of liver tumors via the IVC approach is safe and feasible.
