Linking online discrimination to health among Latinx college students: The moderating role of ethnic-racial identity

INTRODUCTION: The increased prevalence of online media increases the likelihood of encountering online racial discrimination (ORD). However, little is known about how ORD impacts physical health. The current study examined the impact of ORD on perceptions of general health and binge drinking behaviors, and the protective role of ethnic-racial identity (ERI). METHODS: = 20.36) across the US. RESULTS: ORD predicted poorer perceptions of health and less frequent binge drinking. ERI resolution was protective in the relationship between ORD and perceptions of health, and ERI was directly associated with better perceptions of health. DISCUSSION: ORD significantly impacts health, and ERI is a potential avenue for prevention and intervention efforts. These findings indicate the need for more research examining varied aspects of health and have implications for university policy and supportive campus resources to support Latinx students.
