AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF SANDHIGATVATA W.S.R. TO OSTEODARTHRITIS -A CASE STUDY

Sandhigata Vata, described under Vata Vyadhi in classicalAyurvedic texts, closely resembles Osteoarthritis incontemporary medicine. It is characterized by symptoms suchas Shula (pain), Shotha (swelling), Sparsha-asahyata(tenderness), and painful restriction of joint movements.Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder commonlyaffecting weight-bearing joints, leading to progressivedisability and impaired quality of life. This case study presentsa 56-year-old female patient who reported bilateral knee jointpain and swelling, difficulty in walking, and pain in both handsfor the past one year. The symptoms were aggravated bymovement and exposure to cold and were associated with andrestricted joint mobility. Despite undergoing Allopathictreatment, she experienced no significant relief and wasadmitted to the Kayachikitsa O.P.D. with a clinical diagnosis ofSandhigata Vata. Clinical examination and AshtavidhaPariksha findings supported the diagnosis. The management protocol included Panchakarmaprocedure (Janu Basti), internal Ayurvedic medications, and dietary regulation. The treatmentaimed at pacifying aggravated Vata Dosha, nourishing Asthi and Majja Dhatu, and improvingjoint function. Post-treatment assessment showed significant reduction in pain, swelling, andimprovement in mobility and overall quality of life. This case highlights the potential effectiveness of Ayurvedic management, including Panchakarma and internal medications, in the successful management of Sandhigata Vata.
