Coup and Countercoup: Brazilian Industry during the Political Crisis of the Dilma Rousseff Administration

This article analyzes how the industrial segment of the Brazilian bourgeoisie played a role in the political crisis that resulted in the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016. The main hypothesis is that there was no single industrial front that coalesced against the Rousseff government during the political crisis. Before the crisis, the manufacturing industry split into at least three camps: one that completely backed the impeachment coup, another that remained neutrality, and the last that opposed the coup entirely. Each of these camps were driven by economic interests and certain political actors. This article is based on data from public protests led by industrial employers in addition to economic figures and statistics.
