The Significance of Autonomy for the Self-Convened Asambleas of the October 2019 Uprising in Chile

This article investigates the emergence and significance of "asambleas autoconvocadas" (self-convened assemblies) in the aftermath of Chile's October 2019 uprising, after a forty-six-year authoritarian neoliberal regime marked by multiple injustices, inequalities, and abuses. Employing engaged participative ethnography and in-depth interviews, the study scrutinizes the origins, dynamics, and effects of these asambleas, asserting that autonomy plays a pivotal role in shaping their distinct nature. The practice of autonomy, characterized by prefigurative, participative, direct, and horizontal political logics, is a defining feature of these assemblies. This article underscores the overlooked contribution of asambleas to a renewal of political action, emphasizing their reliance on internal initiatives over external institutional influences. The exploration of autonomy shows how these assemblies, through their distinctive political logics, contribute to the broader socio-political landscape. The article concludes by suggesting avenues for future research. Abstract
