Brazil’s Active Non-Alignment amid Major Powers’ Global Competition

In today’s world of increasing geopolitical risks, countries of the Global South play an ever-more important role in reshaping global architecture. Brazil, the largest developing country in the Western Hemisphere, with a non-aligned policy vis à vis the major powers’ game, has played an active part in mediating some international conflicts, drawing world attention. This work seeks to explore the motivations for Brazil’s active non-alignment diplomacy in the twenty-first century and the prospects for its diplomacy in the short- and medium-term. Factors such as the regional and global landscapes, Brazil’s identity as a middle power and the need for economic development are fundamentally shaping the nation’s diplomatic strategy.
