All $$\mathcal L_\infty $$-spaces are separably injective, kind of
Abstract How reasonable is the conjecture that $$\ell _\infty /C[0,1]$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi> <mml:mi>∞</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mi>C</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>[</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>]</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> separably injective? Formulated in homological terms this amounts to asking whether $$\operatorname {Ext}^2(S, C[0,1])=0$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mo>Ext</mml:mo> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>S</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>C</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>[</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>]</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> for every separable space. We wheel around this question and obtain new connections between $$\operatorname {Ext}^2$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mo>Ext</mml:mo> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:math> -results and classical Banach space theorems of Johnson–Zippin, Kalton and Lindenstrauss–Pełczyński.
