Holistic Approach to Geriatric Inguinal Hernia Patient
The management of inguinal hernia in geriatric patients presents unique challenges due to age-related physiological changes, comorbidities, and increased susceptibility to surgical complications. This paper explores both the surgical and holistic approaches to optimizing outcomes in elderly patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair. A comprehensive preoperative assessment is essential, addressing not only the patient’s cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic status but also their nutritional and functional capacities. Surgical decision-making involves selecting the appropriate repair technique – typically favoring tension-free mesh repair to reduce recurrence rates – while balancing risks associated with open versus laparoscopic approaches. Anesthesia planning is crucial, with a preference for regional anesthesia to minimize the likelihood of postoperative delirium and respiratory complications.
