Endovascular Procedure Leading to Thromboembolic Complication in Elderly

Amaurosis fugax, characterized by transient vision loss, is a rare but significant complication of endovascular central nervous system procedures. Geriatric patients present unique challenges, including vascular tortuosity, difficult anatomy, and an increased prevalence of atherosclerosis, which heighten the risk of thromboembolic phenomena during procedures. We report a 60-year-old woman with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and a recent brainstem stroke who developed sudden vision loss during digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Central retinal artery branch occlusion was diagnosed and managed conservatively. This case highlights the importance of meticulous catheter handling, careful anticoagulation, and individualized procedural planning to minimize thromboembolic complications.
