Therapeutic Physical Activity as an Intervention in Psychotherapy
The relationship between physical activity and mental health has become an increasingly significant topic in contemporary psychological and medical research. In recent decades, scientific evidence has demonstrated that physical exercise not only improves physical health but also exerts profound effects on emotional regulation, cognitive functioning, and psychological well-being. This article examines therapeutic physical activity as a complementary intervention within psychotherapeutic treatment. Through an extensive review of interdisciplinary research in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, and sports science, the study explores the physiological, psychological, and social mechanisms through which exercise influences mental health. Particular attention is given to the integration of physical activity into psychotherapeutic frameworks such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and body-oriented psychotherapy. Empirical evidence indicates that structured physical activity can significantly reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress while improving self-esteem, social functioning, and overall quality of life. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses consistently demonstrate moderate to strong effects of exercise interventions on mental health outcomes. Physical activity also contributes to neuroplasticity, emotional regulation, and stress modulation through mechanisms involving neurotransmitters, neurotrophic factors, and hormonal balance. The article discusses clinical applications, methodological considerations, and future research directions aimed at integrating physical activity into mental health care. The findings support the view that therapeutic physical activity represents a promising and holistic strategy for enhancing psychotherapeutic outcomes and promoting psychological resilience.
