SRS151 - Healing beyond the wound: diabetic foot reconstruction—evaluating quality of life and patient satisfaction
Abstract Aims To measure the impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and patient satisfaction following diabetic foot reconstruction utilising plastic surgery techniques. Methods A retrospective single-centre study assessed patient reported outcome measures in diabetic patients who have had plastic surgical reconstruction. HRQoL was calculated using the Euroqol EQ-5D-5L questionnaire at two time points, pre- and post-surgery, comparing both pain and perceived quality of life. Digital records were analysed and telephone interviews were conducted for all patients since the involvement of plastic surgery in the diabetic foot reconstruction service in 2021. To explore satisfaction, patients were asked whether they would undergo the procedures again and recommend the procedures to others. Results A total of 23 patients completed the evaluation. Mean post-operative EQ-5D scores showed an improvement from [11.5 ± 4.9] to [9.8 ± 4.9]. Mean EQ-VAS scores improved significantly from 52 pre-operatively to 65 post-operatively (P = 0.03). Additionally, 96% of patients reported that they would recommend diabetic foot reconstruction to others, and 87% stated they would undergo the procedure again, reflecting high levels of patient satisfaction and perceived value. Conclusions Reconstructive surgery for diabetic foot wounds improved patient reported HRQoL and had high levels of patient satisfaction. This data highlights the need for a fundamental change to pathways with which patients with diabetic feet are managed.
