Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma associated with human papilloma virus
Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) is a growing problem in the UK. HPV-associated OPSCC is a malignant tumour that is caused by transcriptionally active HPV. These tumours have a distinct aetiology, clinical presentation, behaviour and outcomes when compared with other cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx. This article provides an update on the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and pathogenesis of HPV-associated OPSCC. CPD/Clinical Relevance: As the incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma associated with HPV increases, recognising its clinical features is important.
