The complex dynamics of gas percolation in low-porosity, crystal-rich silicic magmas
• The development of gas channels in immobile magmas depends on multiple factors. • Bubble coalescence is a dynamic process controlled by gas and crystal content. • The evolution of channelling can be tracked by observing bubble textures. • Phenocrysts facilitate permeable chains formation but ultimately cause their rupture.
