BRIDGING TRADITION AND MODERNITY: RELEVANCE OF INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS IN MODERN EDUCATION AND THE TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE OF NEP 2020

The knowledge that has evolved on this subcontinent over many generations serves as the basis of the Indian knowledge system. Even though most of this information has been passed down orally and certain written works have been lost to time, remnants of it can still be found in ancient literature such as the Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and also in the writings of ancient intellectuals. The Guru-Shishya Parampara of the ancient education in India, provided a strong and enduring, is still evident in the modern world. This review paper examines the how the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is relevant in the modern education and how the National Education Policy, 2020, contributed a transformative role in merging IKS into the contemporary education. The study reveals learning about IKS not only generate sense of pride, it also helps to develop advance problem solving skills, logical thinking, consciousness, self-discipline, harmony, empathy and respect among the learners, while coexisting with natural world. The study also shows the proposals given by NEP, 2020 such as preservation of traditional knowledge, promotion of multilingual, multicultural classroom along with reconstruction of curriculum by merging traditional knowledge with contemporary disciplines and acknowledging the value of IKS.
