Steroid‐Modified Scabies: Quantifying a Clinically Recognized but Understudied Problem

Corticosteroid use in undiagnosed pruritic dermatoses may modify the clinical course of scabies. Evidence indicates that steroid exposure is associated with higher mite burden, greater disease extent, and delayed healing compared with standard antiparasitic therapy alone. Prolonged steroid use may mask inflammation, delay diagnosis, and facilitate parasite persistence.

Abstract

Corticosteroid use in undiagnosed pruritic dermatoses may modify the clinical course of scabies. Evidence indicates that steroid exposure is associated with higher mite burden, greater disease extent, and delayed healing compared with standard antiparasitic therapy alone. Prolonged steroid use may mask inflammation, delay diagnosis, and facilitate parasite persistence.
