Gold investment in digital trading exchanges: the gold dinar exchange in Malaysia as a model

= This work explores gold investment through digital trading platforms by conducting a case study on the Malaysian Gold Dinar Exchange (BGD), launched in 2024. It aims to assess the model’s operational and Sharīʿah compliance soundness in terms of actual ownership, possession, settlement, custody, and redemption mechanisms, in addition to regulatory and operational risks. The study employed a descriptive methodology to outline the platform’s structure and trading processes (depositing, digitisation, dual wallets, secondary market, and physical redemption), and an analytical methodology to examine Sharīʿah parameters related to the ṣarf contract, mutual possession, gharar, and fees. It also highlights the role of Sharīʿah audit in verifying the existence and purity of gold, inventory balance, and immediacy of transactions. The results indicate that the model provides a clear digital-physical linkage to gold and enhances constructive possession through instant settlement and capability of redemption. Meanwhile, challenges remain in areas such as cybersecurity, fee transparency, and the robustness of independent auditing and governance. The study recommends strengthening the regulatory framework, enhancing cybersecurity, enhancing disclosure, and adopting regular independent audits to ensure sustainability and compliance.
