Dynamic hysteresis characterization of Fe Si materials: Comparison of magnetic performances

Non-oriented (NO) Fe Si steels are widely employed in electrical machines and power electronics, yet the influence of the characterization method on their assessed magnetic performance remains poorly explored. This study provides a systematic comparison of three commercial NO Fe Si materials, investigated using three standard samples geometries—strip, toroid, and disk—each tested with its dedicated measurement setup: Epstein frame, Volt-Amperometric method, and Rotational Single Disk Tester, respectively. Measurements were carried out over a wide range of magnetic flux densities and frequencies, from industrial (50 Hz) to medium–low frequency power electronics (<1 kHz). The results reveal that the relative ranking of the materials' magnetic performances remains consistent across all characterization techniques. This finding demonstrates that material selection for specific applications can reliably be based on results from any of these standard methods, thus bridging conventional characterization approaches and practical design needs. • Comparison of different Not-Oriented Fe Si materials with different thicknesses and Silicon percentages. • Different samples geometries considered for the comparison: stripe, toroid and disk. • Three different characteriza on techniques adopted: Epstein Frame method, Volt Amperometric method, Rota onal Single Disk Tester method. • Demonstra on that the rela ve ranking of the materials' magne c performances remains consistent across all characteriza on techniques.
