Incidence of diplopia associated with pure orbital blowout fracture: A narrative review

Objectives: To review the incidence, pathophysiology, and prognosis of diplopia associated with pure orbital blowout fractures. Methods: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using databases focusing on orbital trauma, diplopia incidence, muscle entrapment, timing of surgical intervention, and treatment outcomes. Data were compared across multiple studies. Results: Reported incidence of diplopia ranged from 23% to 50% at presentation. Most cases resolved spontaneously within 6–12 weeks, particularly in the absence of muscle entrapment. Early surgical intervention within 10–14 days demonstrated improved symptom resolution in selected patients. Conclusions: Diplopia is a common but often self-limiting complication of orbital blowout fractures. Early diagnosis, radiological evaluation, and individualized treatment planning significantly enhance functional recovery.
