A New Era in Abortion Care in Western Australia—A Review of Women Accessing Abortion Care in a Tertiary Centre Following Legislative Change

In March 2024 there was a significant change to abortion legislation in Western Australia, which until this time had operated under some of the most restrictive laws in Australia. These legislative modifications have provided abortion access consistent with contemporary women's reproductive rights. We present a snap-shot of the impact of this abortion legislative change in the state's largest obstetric and gynaecology hospital, reviewing access to abortion care over a 12 month period straddling this change. The most significant has been the increased access to post-20 week gestation abortion care and the expansion of a specific abortion care service.

Abstract

In March 2024 there was a significant change to abortion legislation in Western Australia, which until this time had operated under some of the most restrictive laws in Australia. These legislative modifications have provided abortion access consistent with contemporary women's reproductive rights. We present a snap-shot of the impact of this abortion legislative change in the state's largest obstetric and gynaecology hospital, reviewing access to abortion care over a 12 month period straddling this change. The most significant has been the increased access to post-20 week gestation abortion care and the expansion of a specific abortion care service.
