That you distinguish this word from that one — that “this” is not “that”; that between thebeginning of this sentence and its end there lies a direction you did not choose and yetfollow — is not something this sentence communicates to you. It is what must already haveoccurred before anything could communicate anything to you at all. And you cannot doubtit without thereby enacting it. What this paragraph uncovers is not a thesis. It is the condition under which theses becomepossible.
