Bone expansion using conventional osteotomy versus advanced bone expansion procedures: A scoping review

Objectives: To compare conventional osteotomy techniques with advanced bone expansion techniques (ABET) for improving primary implant stability. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using electronic and manual searches. From 474 initial records, 66 studies met inclusion criteria, including animal studies, human trials, case reports, and reviews. Implant stability outcomes following osteotomes, motorized expanders, piezosurgery expanders, and osseodensification burs were analyzed. Results: Osseodensification techniques demonstrated the highest improvement in primary implant stability, followed by motorized bone expanders and conventional osteotomes. Both animal and human studies consistently supported enhanced bone compaction and stability with ABET. Conclusions: Advanced bone expansion techniques, particularly osseodensification, offer superior implant primary stability compared to conventional osteotomy methods and represent an effective approach in implant site preparation.
