A critical review of Sneha avartana: Repetitive pharmaceutical treatment for value-adding potential of Ayurvedic medicated fats and oils

Sneha avartana is a specialized Ayurvedic pharmaceutical technique in which medicated fats and oils undergo repeated Paka (~transformation) cycles with fresh Kalka (~medicinal substances in paste form) and liquid media, producing stepwise potentiation and qualitative transformation of the lipid base. Drawing on over 30 classical treatises and formularies, this review compiles formulations of Shatapaka (~processed 100 times) and Sahasrapaka (~processed 1000 times) Taila (~oil) and Ghrita (~ghee). These preparations are predominantly indicated for Rasayana (~rejuvenation) and for chronic Vata -predominant conditions such as Vatavyadhi (Vata-related disorders), neurodegenerative and cardio-metabolic diseases. Preclinical studies on Avartita ghrita and taila report superior anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, neuroprotective, and wound-healing effects at reduced doses compared with single-processed controls, consistent with genuine pharmacological potentiation. Clinical reports further show that Avartita sneha improves pain, stiffness, neurological deficits, functional scores, and ulcer healing in cervical spondylosis, neuromuscular, and chronic ulcer patients, without significant adverse drug reactions, supporting both efficacy and safety in practice. Mechanistically, repeated coprocessing with herbs and milk appears to enrich the lipid matrix with phytoconstituents and amphiphilic components, fostering formation of supramolecular assemblies that may enhance solubility, tissue penetration, and residence time, although detailed structural and pharmacokinetic characterization remains an important future research priority.
