Abstract

The research dealt with the duality of religious extremism and religious tolerance and its impact on societal reality, as the phenomenon of religious extremism is considered a cause of conflicts and wars between peoples and thus exploits intellectual movements that attempt to destabilize societies. The religious discourses adopted by extremist intellectual movements have had great harm on Muslim-majority societies. Especially the charged religious discourse that entrenches hatred, malice, and hatred of others, and through the analytical approach in the research, the phenomenon of religious extremism and its causes were identified, as well as the role of religious tolerance as an existing necessity to reduce such problems, considering religious tolerance a basic pillar of religion. Most human societies suffer in successive periods of time from a clear spread of the phenomenon of religious and even intellectual extremism in all its forms, and consequently societal security and peace have become threatened and suffer from instability and the atmosphere has become charged with hatred and animosity of various ideological and intellectual orientations. The research relied on the analytical and descriptive approach in order to present and explain the phenomena of religious extremism and religious tolerance and to clarify the causes and effects on societies.
