Magnification‐assisted visualisation for successful catheterisation in a female cat with urethral obstruction

Abstract A 4‐year‐old, 3.3‐kg, stray, female cat was presented after vehicular trauma, showing severe pain, orthopnoeic breathing, ocular trauma, facial wounds, abdominal pain and hypoxaemia (SpO 2 77%). Imaging revealed mild pneumothorax, craniofacial fractures, hepatocolangitis and cystitis with sediment. After initial stabilisation, the patient developed progressive stranguria and anuria. Ultrasound confirmed a distended bladder, proximal urethral dilation, and a distal urethral plug. Under intravenous sedation and monitoring, cystocentesis was performed to decompress the bladder, followed by urethral catheterisation using 3.5× surgical loupes and a headlamp for magnification‐assisted visualisation. A 1.0 × 130 mm Kruuse catheter was placed without difficulty, and bladder lavage was performed. The catheter was maintained for 5 days, after which spontaneous urination resumed uneventfully.
