The Cost of Holding

To love someone is to remain exposed to them. Not merely to tolerate their presence or to feel warmth in their direction, but to keep open a channel through which they can reach you — and through which they can hurt you. Love is the decision, renewed daily and often unconsciously, to not seal yourself off from someone whose actions you cannot control. This is expensive. Not metaphorically expensive — structurally expensive.

Abstract

To love someone is to remain exposed to them. Not merely to tolerate their presence or to feel warmth in their direction, but to keep open a channel through which they can reach you — and through which they can hurt you. Love is the decision, renewed daily and often unconsciously, to not seal yourself off from someone whose actions you cannot control. This is expensive. Not metaphorically expensive — structurally expensive.
