Application of artificial intelligence in a digital platform for sustainability in the floating community in the Amazon Brazil

Abstract This study presents an innovative model for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into a digital platform to promote sustainability in the floating community of Lake Catalão, located in the Brazilian Amazon. The research combines socio-environmental diagnosis, technological development, and community engagement to address critical challenges such as inadequate sanitation, unstable energy supply, and climate-related risks. Using a mixed-methods approach—including surveys, interviews, and participant observation—the study mapped local infrastructure, environmental conditions, and social dynamics. The project resulted in the development of nine AI-based prototypes focused on water quality monitoring, energy efficiency, intelligent waste management, and environmental education through gamification. These tools were designed in collaboration with the community and academic institutions, ensuring contextual relevance and social inclusion. A publicly accessible digital platform was created to centralize data and foster transparency, participation, and informed decision-making. Findings highlight the community’s strong environmental awareness and adaptability, despite systemic vulnerabilities. The study underscores the importance of participatory, interdisciplinary approaches that bridge scientific knowledge, technological innovation, and traditional practices. By positioning the Catalão community as a living laboratory, this research contributes to the discourse on sustainable development, climate resilience, and socio-environmental justice in remote and ecologically sensitive regions.
