Proposal of a Simulation-Ready Framework for Integrating Digital Safety Passports using AutomationML-Based Engineering and Education

This paper proposes a framework for integrating Digital Safety Passports (DSPs) into the engineering and operational lifecycle of machines within cyber-physical production environments. Leveraging AutomationML and Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), the approach enables semantic interoperability and continuous data exchange across simulation, commissioning and reuse phases. DSPs consolidate heterogeneous data sources-including safety documentation, simulation results, runtime diagnostics, and maintenance records-into a structured, interoperable format. This facilitates predictive safety assessments, regulatory compliance and supports machine transparency and reusability throughout its lifecycle. The concept also includes didactic implementation, illustrating how DSP-based scenarios enhance engineering education by bridging theory and practice in safety-critical system design. By aligning with emerging Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements, the proposed method contributes to circular engineering practices and prepares industrial and academic stakeholders for future regulatory and technological demands. The results underscore the potential of DSP-enabled workflows to improve safety, efficiency and traceability in smart manufacturing systems.
