Study of the Effects of Shaped Charges of Explosive Mixtures With Tungsten Powder on Steel Plates

ABSTRACT The effect of tungsten powder content in a mixture with explosive on the impact of shaped charges on steel partitions was examined. The size of the hole in the first plate and the deflection of the second plate, as well as the size of the crater created in the thick plate, were analyzed. X‐ray images of the jets formed after the detonation of charges with a conical cavity were also taken. The calculated parameters of the detonation of explosive mixtures with tungsten powder were used to analyze the results obtained. The analysis of the experimental results demonstrates that the effects of detonation product jets from conical cavity charges, pressed from explosive mixtures containing varying amounts of tungsten powder, are similar when impacting thick steel plates. However, distinct differences are observed in the effects on a structure composed of thin steel plates. Specifically, the depth of indentation in the second plate increases with the tungsten powder content in the mixture.
