Design, Implementation, and IEC 61980 Compliance Testing of an Inductive Wireless Power Transfer System for EV Charging Applications

This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of an inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle (EV) charging, with emphasis on system-level compliance with the IEC 61980 standard. The proposed system operates at a rated power of 7.24 kW and an operating frequency of 20 kHz, and is experimentally evaluated under realistic underground installation conditions. Experimental results demonstrate stable power transfer with a maximum measured efficiency exceeding 90% under nominal alignment. The novelty of this work lies in its integrated, system-level experimental validation covering multiple IEC 61980 requirements within a single prototype, whereas existing studies typically address individual compliance aspects in isolation. Comprehensive compliance-oriented testing includes magnetic field exposure assessment against ICNIRP limits, temperature rise evaluation of power electronic components, coils, enclosure, and biological tissue-equivalent materials, as well as power quality analysis. The measured magnetic field levels and temperature rise remain within the limits specified in IEC 61980-3, and a power factor above 0.9 is achieved. Although harmonic distortion remains relatively high, the results confirm that the proposed WPT system satisfies key IEC 61980 safety, thermal, electromagnetic, and power factor requirements. Voltage and current harmonics require further improvement and are concerns in WPT systems.
