IoT and Digital Twin Integration for Sustainable Textile Manufacturing towards industry 5.0: GrEen Network

Industry 5.0 is emerging as a significant trend in the industrial sector, focusing on human-centered sustainability and adaptability. This new paradigm involves integrating existing equipment, processes, and devices with sensors to enable digital production, supported by key enabling technologies. In this context, industries are moving towards the creation of customized and efficient processes that address consumer needs. Digital twin technology plays a crucial role in this transformation, as it allows for the monitoring, simulation, and optimization of ongoing processes while reducing the likelihood of errors. The present research introduces a pilot study conducted in Italy, which proposes a digital platform incorporating IoT-based sensors for real-time data monitoring and process optimization. The platform uses this data to support informed decision-making and proactive management of industrial operations. A simulated experiment in a virtual textile manufacturing environment demonstrates the system’s ability to reduce unplanned downtimes, improve energy efficiency, and enhance overall equipment effectiveness. The study contributes to the expanding field of digital transformation in sustainable manufacturing and presents a scalable approach that can be applied across various industrial sectors.
