Theory of Expansion-Induced Metric Tension (TEIM)

We propose the Theory of Expansion-Induced Metric Tension (TEIM), an exact variational framework in which the universe is modeled not as an empty geometric stage, but as a relativistic continuous medium capable of storing elastic memory. In this picture, what is usually interpreted as dark energy is reinterpreted as the macroscopic relaxation of the space-time fabric itself: a strained continuum slowly releasing stored potential energy while local structures excite an additional relational tension mode. To make this vision fully covariant, we combine a material-coordinate description of the medium with the Schutz-Brown formalism for relativistic fluids. The effective theory contains two coupled degrees of freedom: a global volumetric strain field s, encoding stored elastic memory, and a local relational mode ψ, driven strictly by spatial gradients through the fluid projector. We derive the exact equations of motion, the exact stress-energy tensor, and its covariant divergence, showing that the continuum exchanges spatial momentum with the fluid while preserving comoving local energy conservation. In a perfectly homogeneous FLRW background, the relational mode switches off (ψ = 0), while the strain sector survives and governs the cosmic expansion through modified Friedmann equations. For a logarithmic-hyperbolic elastic potential, U(s) = U⋆ ln cosh(s/s⋆), the background admits a slow-roll quasi-attractor that naturally mimics w ≈ −1 without possessing an exact de Sitter fixed point. We derive the dimensionless background system, prove that the elastic energy reservoir decays monotonically in an expanding universe, and show through phase-space analysis that the theory predicts Hubble freezing at early times, late-time thawing, transient acceleration, and damped overshoot about the relaxed state. An exploratory numerical trajectory illustrates that TEIM can reproduce a present-day background close to ΛCDM while preserving a radically different physical interpretation: cosmic acceleration as elastic relaxation rather than vacuum energy. We then push the perturbative program one step further. First, expanding the pure (s, ψ) sector to quadratic order on exact FLRW with ¯s(t) and ψ¯ = 0, we show that the perturbations decouple at this order. The strain fluctuation δs is the unique propagating linear mode of the exact background, obeying a damped wave equation with sound speed c 2 s = κx/κt and requiring κt > 0, κx > 0 for ghost-free and gradient-stable evolution. By contrast, the relational fluctuation δψ carries no temporal kinetic term on exact FLRW and is therefore auxiliary/non-propagating at the linear-quadratic level. Next, including scalar metric and fluid perturbations in Newtonian gauge, we show that this picture survives intact: δT (ψ) µν = 0 at first order, the linear Einstein system is sourced 1 by the matter fluid together with the strain perturbation alone, and in the absence of external anisotropic stress one recovers Φ = Ψ. The cosmological linear sector of TEIM is therefore governed by the coupled (δs, Φ, δm) system. In the observationally relevant subhorizon regime this yields an effective Poisson equation with a derived, scale-dependent Geff(k, a) controlled by the elastic background itself rather than by an ad hoc running coupling. The conceptual picture is thereby sharpened in the most revealing way: s governs the homogeneous and linear cosmological response of the universe, while ψ is reserved for the genuinely relational world of structure, anisotropy, coarse-graining, and nonlinear spatial tension. TEIM thus remains not merely a technical alternative to dark energy, but a coherent mechanical vision of a universe that remembers, relaxes, and reacts.
