The Human Experience Framework: A Neuroscience-Grounded Clinical Manual for Body-Based Therapeutic Assessment and Intervention
This manual presents the Human Experience Framework (HEF), a neuroscience-grounded classification system for understanding human psychological suffering through the lens of predictive processing, primary affect systems, distributed functional brain networks, and somatic experience. The HEF was developed as the clinical foundation for the Cathexis digital therapeutics platform but is presented here as a standalone clinical framework. The framework addresses a documented limitation of existing classification systems: the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 organize suffering by symptom clusters derived from committee consensus, producing categories with limited neurobiological validity. The HEF organizes experience by the underlying neurobiological patterns that generate suffering — how a person's nervous system is currently organized and what that organization feels like from the inside. The manual integrates seven major research programs: constructed emotion theory (Barrett), predictive processing (Friston), affective neuroscience (Panksepp), somatic markers (Damasio), neuropsychoanalysis (Solms), the entangled brain framework (Pessoa), and memory systems (Kandel, Nader, Schiller, Ecker). It presents 16 territories of human experience, each defined by a characteristic predictive pattern, affect configuration, distributed network configuration, somatic signature, and change pathway. The manual includes Characteristic Network Configuration sections grounded in Pessoa's work on distributed functional coordination, Framework-Specific Limitations for each territory, expanded assessment architecture including the Comprehensive Dynamic Experience Assessment (CDEA) three-tier model, and a reframed therapeutic model distinguishing HEF mechanisms from existing approaches (CBT, DBT, ACT, psychodynamic). Includes: 16 complete territory profiles (12 sections each), progressive intake model, CDEA tiered assessment, clinical integration guidelines, safety and escalation architecture, and regulatory positioning.
