Uncaria Rhynchophylla : A Comprehensive Review of its Traditional Uses and Modern Applications in Chinese Medicine
Introduction: Uncaria rhynchophylla, commonly known as Gou Teng, is a well-known herb in traditional Chinese medicine, valued for its broad range of therapeutic uses. Traditionally, it has been used to treat conditions such as hypertension, headaches, and various neurological disorders, largely due to its calming and neuroprotective effects. Methods: This review compiles and analyzes findings from both classical texts and recent scientific studies, focusing on the herb’s pharmacological properties and clinical potential. Key databases were searched to gather information on its bioactive compounds, therapeutic applications, and proposed mechanisms of action. Results: This review identified several active compounds in Uncaria rhynchophylla, most notably rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline. These compounds have demonstrated promising effects in managing hypertension, anxiety, and neurodegenerative diseases. The herb has also shown significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties in preclinical studies. Discussion: This review highlights the potential of Uncaria rhynchophylla in modern medical applications, particularly in cardiovascular and neurological health. Its traditional uses are increasingly being supported by scientific evidence, although most current studies focus on its effects in isolation rather than in traditional multi-herb formulations. Further investigation is needed to better understand its synergistic effects within complex prescriptions. Conclusion: This review emphasizes the importance of Uncaria rhynchophylla as both a traditional and scientifically promising medicinal herb. While significant progress has been made in understanding its pharmacological potential, more research is needed to bridge traditional practices with modern clinical applications. Future studies should also explore its use in combination with other herbs, in alignment with traditional Chinese medicine practices.
