A Prospective Study of Deviated Nasal Septum and its Association with Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Background: Deviated nasal septum (DNS) is a common anatomical abnormality that can lead to nasal blockage and impaired nasal airflow. These changes predispose patients to chronic alterations in the mucosa of the nasal cavity and sinuses, contributing to various ENT conditions. This study aims to investigate the incidence of DNS and its clinical correlation with associated ear, nose, and throat (ENT) pathologies.Materials and methods: A total of 60 patients diagnosed with DNS were prospectively studied. Each case was examined to determine the type of septal deviation and accompanying ENT symptoms. The relationship between specific types of DNS and associated ENT conditions was evaluated. Results: Participants ranged in age from 11 to 56 years, with a mean age of 29.The male-to-female ratio was 1.73:1.Left-sided deviations were more prevalent than right-sided ones. The most frequently observed deformity was the "C"-shaped septum.Nasal obstruction was the most common symptom.Among the 60 patients, 25% showed sinonasal complications, 38.33% had ear-related issues, and 15% experienced throat symptoms."S"-shaped deviations demonstrated a higher correlation with ENT pathologies compared to other types. Conclusion:The study highlights a significant association between the "S"-shaped septal deviation and the development of ENT conditions.
