Uniform magnetic field enhances viability of static cold storage livers and ensures transplantation efficacy
Background: In the realm of organ transplantation, static cold storage is extensively employed as the primary approach for organ preservation. Enhancing preservation technologies is vital to the quality of donor organs, which significantly influences the post-transplant survival rates and complications incidence. Thus, it is imperative to introduce innovative approaches to foster continual advancements in organ preservation. Materials and Methods: Notably, oxidative stress damage is an unavoidable occurrence during liver preservation and the ischemia-reperfusion process, leading to a decline in liver quality and consequently affecting post-transplant liver survival and patient outcomes. We have recently innovated the preservation method for rat livers by employing non-invasive physical methods to minimize oxidative stress during preservation, enhancing liver vitality in the process. Results: We established a uniform magnetic field (MF) cold storage platform, evaluating its effects on liver quality under various MF strengths. Furthermore, we conducted normothermic mechanical perfusion and rat liver transplant experiments on the preserved livers to assess the technique’s protective efficacy during the acute ischemia-reperfusion phase. Conclusion: This study proposes a straightforward approach to liver preservation and is expected to later provide technical support for critical medical practices such as liver transplantation.
