High Temperature High Pressure Cable for Subsurface Instrumentation

The development and evaluation of high-temperature (HT) downhole logging cables, such as the four-conductor metal tubed cable, developed by Prysmian Group, being assessed by Sandia National Laboratories, represent a significant advancement in geothermal well technology and other subsurface measurements. Traditional downhole logging tools face numerous challenges due to harsh conditions characterized by high temperatures (often exceeding 200 °C), high pressures (up to 5,000 psi), and aggressive chemical compositions of well fluids. Real-time data transmission is critical for monitoring and analysis; however, traditional Teflon-based cables can fail due to the dissolution of grease seals into well fluids, leading to electrical shorts, and the softening of Teflon at elevated temperatures, which can cause conductor contact and shorts. This reliance on grease seals significantly limits the operational duration of existing cable systems. The four-conductor metal tubed cable features two major innovations: glass braid insulation that withstands temperatures well above 300 °C and insulated conductors encased in metal tubing, creating a robust high-pressure seal that eliminates the need for grease seals. This design enhances durability and reliability, enabling continuous operation without the risk of fluid ingress. Sandia National Laboratories has evaluated the four-conductor cable, focusing on its performance at elevated temperatures and pressures. The successful implementation of this cable could revolutionize downhole logging tools, enabling extended operational lifespans and improved data reliability, ultimately contributing to the sustainability of geothermal energy as a viable resource. Abstract
