To Study the Prevalence of Negative Body Image in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Experience from a Tertiary Center in Central India
Abstract Introduction: Body image is a subjective perception of an individual toward their body, which may be positive or negative. Negative image is defined by negative thoughts and feelings about one’s appearance. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder, and its symptoms may contribute to a negative body image. Aim: This study aims to study the prevalence of negative body image in patients with PCOS. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study carried out at the endocrinology department. A total of 150 individuals recently diagnosed with PCOS were recruited. The Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI) was used to assess body image. Results: Forty-two percent (63 of 150) of our population suffering from PCOS struggle with negative body image, with high appearance anxiety as calculated by the AAI score. Among our population, 36.51% on treatment for PCOS and 45.98% not on treatment for PCOS had high appearance anxiety. Conclusion: Prevalence of high appearance anxiety with negative body image is significant in individuals with PCOS. Our study encourages screening for appearance anxiety in individuals with PCOS, as early identification of negative body image can facilitate timely referral to mental health professionals for appropriate psychological interventions.
