A Rare Case of Live Embryo Cornual Pregnancy at 8 Weeks: Emergency Surgical Management and Review of Literature
IntroductIonCornual pregnancy, a rare and potentially fatal form of ectopic pregnancy, occurs when the fertilized ovum implants within the interstitial portion of the fallopian tube. 1 This region is uniquely surrounded by a thick myometrial layer and is highly vascularized, allowing the pregnancy to develop further than other ectopic pregnancies before clinical symptoms appear.Because of its location, cornual pregnancy presents a significantly higher risk of massive hemorrhage and maternal mortality when compared to tubal ectopic pregnancies. 2,3lthough ectopic pregnancies account for 1-2% of all pregnancies, cornual pregnancies represent only 2-4% of those cases, yet they are disproportionately responsible for severe maternal outcomes. 2,4he etiology of cornual pregnancy is multifactorial, with several well-established risk factors contributing to its occurrence.Prior uterine surgeries, such as cesarean sections, myomectomies, or dilation and curettage, can alter the anatomy of the fallopian tubes, increasing the likelihood of abnormal implantation. 5,6Additionally, assisted reproductive technologies (ART), particularly in vitro fertilization (IVF), have been associated with an increased incidence of cornual pregnancy, likely due to altered embryo transfer mechanics and implantation dynamics. 7,8
