You Make Me Feel Like Dancing:On how coloured illuminations make us move in space

Abstract

Light and colour are fundamental to the creation and experience of
space. Whether consciously or not, architecture, landscapes, and urban design
deal with light and colour by giving shape and form to our lived environment for
us humans to perceive - ultimately setting a starting point for our experience
and being in space (Lam 1977; Charalambous and Djebbara 2023). As such light
and colour not only hold potential to attune spaces - the effect goes for bodies
too.

This presentation argues for how the attuning potential of coloured
illuminations go beyond giving shape and form to our lived environment, by also
attuning the human body towards particular modes of movement. In this regard,
the presentation ultimately highlights the attuning power of coloured
illuminations to influence human perception, experience and behaviour in space.
