Online Retailing and Marketplace Ecosystems: Structure, Dynamics, and Economic Implications

Abstract The rapid growth of digital technologies has transformed traditional retailing into platform-based online retailing systems, giving rise to complex marketplace ecosystems. These ecosystems connect multiple stakeholders, including sellers, consumers, logistics providers, and digital payment intermediaries, through centralized online platforms. This paper examines the structure and dynamics of online retailing marketplace ecosystems and analyses their economic implications for businesses, consumers, and the overall market environment. The study explores how platform strategies, network effects, and data-driven operations influence competition, consumer behaviour, and value creation. It also investigates the opportunities and challenges associated with online retail marketplaces, such as market concentration, pricing transparency, and regulatory concerns. The paper concludes that online retailing marketplace ecosystems play a critical role in reshaping modern commerce by enhancing efficiency, expanding market access, and transforming retail business models, while also necessitating effective regulatory oversight to ensure fair competition and sustainable growth.
