The influence of country of origin on branding processes in Born Global firms: An examination of the “liability of foreignness”

Abstract This systematic review aims to revive and refresh the literature on the country-of-origin effect from the perspective of industrial buyers, a topic which, in contrast to consumer buying, received scant attention. This work presents an integrative framework outlining the key factors central to industrial buying situations that influence the country-of-origin outcomes. This framework includes the key mediators and moderators, as well as other influencing factors, such as the operationalization of the country of origin, single vs. multiple information cues presented to the decision-maker, the characteristics of the buying center, and the buying situation. At the review’s conclusion, the authors offer several compelling future research directions that will advance this critical yet neglected research field. Undertaking research into these areas will help establish why and in which industrial buying situations the country of origin plays an important role, and which decision-makers pay more attention to it.
