4-02-Foundations-What Is Tuina? Traditional Chinese Bodywork Explained |

Abstract This article introduces Tuina as a classical form of traditional Chinese therapeutic bodywork and situates it within the HanFlow framework of embodied self-care. Rather than approaching Tuina as general massage, the article presents it as a structured medical tradition with over two millennia of historical continuity, rooted in the theoretical foundations of classical Chinese medicine. Emerging during the Han Dynasty, Tuina developed alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine as a hands-on clinical method for regulating pain and maintaining functional balance. It operates within the meridian system, which describes pathways through which qi (vital energy) and blood circulate. From this perspective, physical discomfort is understood not solely as muscular tension but as disruption within interconnected energetic and physiological processes. Tuina therefore employs rhythmic manual techniques — including pushing (tui), grasping (na), pressing (an), rubbing (mo), and kneading (rou) — to stimulate circulation, restore mobility, and support systemic regulation. The article clarifies how Tuina differs from common Western massage modalities. Whereas Swedish massage and deep tissue techniques primarily emphasize muscular relaxation or biomechanical correction, Tuina integrates energetic theory with anatomical awareness. Its approach favors gradual, precise, and rhythmically paced pressure rather than forceful manipulation. Recent clinical research suggests potential benefits in areas such as musculoskeletal pain, knee osteoarthritis, and functional digestive disorders, although Tuina should be understood as a complementary practice rather than a substitute for medical treatment. Within the HanFlow system, Tuina represents the domain of external body regulation. Together with Tai Chi (movement-based awareness) and Mindful Eating (digestive and relational awareness), it forms a three-part model of embodied balance adapted to contemporary life. In this integrative context, gentle self-Tuina becomes a practical and accessible daily maintenance method, particularly relevant in sedentary, screen-oriented environments characterized by postural strain and stress accumulation. By presenting Tuina through historical context, theoretical explanation, comparative positioning, safety considerations, and practical application, this article offers both conceptual clarity and grounded guidance for modern readers seeking sustainable approaches to self-care.

Abstract

Abstract This article introduces Tuina as a classical form of traditional Chinese therapeutic bodywork and situates it within the HanFlow framework of embodied self-care. Rather than approaching Tuina as general massage, the article presents it as a structured medical tradition with over two millennia of historical continuity, rooted in the theoretical foundations of classical Chinese medicine. Recent clinical research suggests potential benefits in areas such as musculoskeletal pain, knee osteoarthritis, and functional digestive disorders, although Tuina should be understood as a complementary practice rather than a substitute for medical treatment.
