Typhoid fever: recognition and management
Typhoid fever is a notable vaccine-preventable disease and remains a risk for UK travellers to low- and middle-income countries, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to safe water. It is caused by Salmonella typhi and spreads through contaminated food and water, leading to severe illness if untreated. Recent UK data show rising cases among travellers, especially those visiting friends and relatives in South Asia, alongside increasing antibiotic resistance. This article summarises the causes, symptoms and complications of typhoid, and highlights prevention strategies, including vaccination and safe food and water practices. Understanding these measures is essential for health professionals in primary care to advise and protect travellers effectively.
