Ultrasound-assisted Synthesis of Schiff Bases from 4-Aminoantipyrine: A Green and Efficient Approach
Introduction: The objective of this study was to develop a rapid, efficient, and ecofriendly method for synthesizing Schiff bases using ultrasound irradiation, addressing the limitations of conventional methods that often require prolonged reaction times and harsh conditions. Methods: A series of Schiff bases (3a–k) were synthesized via the condensation of 4- aminoantipyrine with various aldehydes in ethanol, using glacial acetic acid as a catalyst. Ultrasound irradiation (40 kHz) was applied for 0–5 minutes, and the reaction progress was monitored using thin-layer chromatography (TLC). The products were purified and characterized using standard spectroscopic techniques. Optimization studies were performed to determine the most effective solvent–catalyst system. Results: Ultrasound-assisted synthesis significantly reduced reaction time compared with conventional methods, achieving yields of up to 86%. Optimization identified ethanol and glacial acetic acid as the most effective combination, enabling consistently high yields across all synthesized derivatives. Discussion: The marked reduction in reaction time and the high yields obtained under mild conditions highlight the advantages of ultrasound irradiation over traditional heating methods. This approach reduces energy consumption and chemical waste, aligning with green chemistry principles. The method is versatile for a variety of aldehyde substrates, although further investigation is required to assess its applicability to more complex systems. Conclusion: Ultrasound-assisted synthesis provides a sustainable, rapid, and high-yielding alternative for Schiff base preparation, offering significant improvements in efficiency and environmental impact compared with conventional approaches.
