Species Security Financing: Securing Native African Tree Species under the African Native Tree Seed Security System (ANTSSS)

This working paper introduces Species Security Financing as a mechanism for supporting the long-term conservation of native African tree species under the African Native Tree Seed Security System (ANTSSS). ANTSSS defines species security through seed collections from at least fifty genetically distinct parent trees, storage in three independent seed bank nodes, and establishment in three living conservation populations. The paper proposes a practical financing approach through which institutions, companies, foundations, and individual donors can support the biological security of tree species one species at a time.

Abstract

This working paper introduces Species Security Financing as a mechanism for supporting the long-term conservation of native African tree species under the African Native Tree Seed Security System (ANTSSS). ANTSSS defines species security through seed collections from at least fifty genetically distinct parent trees, storage in three independent seed bank nodes, and establishment in three living conservation populations. The paper proposes a practical financing approach through which institutions, companies, foundations, and individual donors can support the biological security of tree species one species at a time.
