"RATAT ANESA TEPET ASENA TATAR": A SATOR- Type Word Square in the Albanian Language
This article presents and analyzes an original Albanian SATOR-type word square constructed from the sequence “RATAT ANESA TEPET ASENA TATAR”. Word squares of this type represent rare linguistic structures in which a five-by-five arrangement of letters reads identically both horizontally and vertically. The most famous historical example, the Latin SATOR square (“SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS”), dates back nearly two millennia and has been discovered in several archaeological sites, including the ruins of Pompeii. Attempts to reproduce comparable structures in other languages have proven extremely difficult because such constructions must simultaneously satisfy strict combinatorial symmetry, lexical validity, and semantic coherence. The Albanian square analyzed in this study demonstrates that it is possible to construct a meaningful and structurally consistent SATOR-type configuration within the Albanian language. The paper examines the structural symmetry, linguistic composition, and semantic interpretation of the square and situates it within the broader tradition of recreational linguistics and enigmatics.
