REDEFINING WOMANHOOD : TRAVANCORE'S WOMEN IN THE COLONIAL ERA

The redefinition of womanhood in Travancore during the 20th century was a complex, multi-layered, and historically significant process shaped by profound social reforms, political transformations, cultural negotiations, and shifts in education, economy, and family structures, collectively contributing to the evolution of women's identities in the region. At the dawn of the 20th century, Travancore was a princely state characterized by deep-rooted caste stratification, patriarchal moral codes, and rigid expectations surrounding female conduct, where women's roles were largely confined to domestic spheres, ritual obligations, and community defined notions of purity and respectability. Social norms varied greatly across caste lines such as upper caste Nair, Namboodiri, and aristocratic women lived within tightly controlled familial systems that valued chastity, lineage purity, and domestic obedience, while lower-caste women were burdened by exploitative labor, restricted mobility, and oppressive social practices imposed by dominant castes. Systems such as marumakkathayam, illom and patriarchy along with the remnants of caste-based control over women's sexuality and labour, created a social landscape in which womanhood was defined by community norms rather than personal agency. The historical and analytical approach used to study the topic. The major findings of the study is, women who were once confined primarily to domestic, ritual, or caste based obligations began to navigate new identities as students, workers, and social participants. Patriarchal norms such as seclusion, ritual purity restrictions, and caste-bound duties were challenged, especially among upper caste women.
